How to Take Action this ACTOBER!

Are you tired of hearing the same top 40 music? Are you disappointed that you cannot find any local news coverage on your radio dial? Can you imagine media as a tool for social justice organizing instead of an outlet for misinformation and distraction?

Then now is the time to take action! It's easy as 1, 2, 3:

1) Call your Congressional Representative's office and ask to speak to the staff person who covers telecom issues. (If you do not know who your representative is, go to Govtrack.us, Free Press, or call the Prometheus office and we will help you through it: 215-727-9620)

2) Tell the telecom staffer, either over the phone or on their voice mail:

"I am a constituent of (Congressperson X) and I am calling to urge him/her to support HR 1147, which expands the Low Power FM radio service, creating opportunities for local community media outlets in our district. The Local Community Radio Act is advancing rapidly, it has been unanimously voted out of the Energy and Commerce Committee and will come to a floor vote shortly. Can I count on Representative X's vote in support of HR 1147?”

3) Following the call, send an email to expandlpfm@prometheusradio.org to tell us how your call went.

Tell Congress to Pass the Local Community Radio Act

Hello Low Power Radio Fans!

The Prometheus Radio Project is collaborating with dozens of economic, social, and media justice groups to take action to all summer long to pass the Local Community Radio Act (HR 1147/S592). Here is an overview of how you can take action:

1) Join people from across the country on MONDAY JULY 20, 2009 to tell Congress to open up the airwaves by passing the Local Community Radio Act.

The Local Community Radio Act HR 1147 would expand Low Power FM radio stations and open the airwaves up to potentially tens of thousands of new community radio stations across the country.

Steps for Taking Action:
1. Look up your Congressional Representative at Congress.org
2. Find out if they have already supported the Local Community Radio Act.
See a list of cosponsors at govtrack.us and search for Bill number HR 1147.
3. Call the Congressional Switchboard at: (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Representative's office.

*If your representative is not a cosponsor tell him/her to support expanding Low Power FM all across the country and cosponsor the bill.

*If your representative is a cosponsor ask him/her to reach out to Congressional Leadership to let them know that this is an important priority around the county.

We will also actively be using Facebook and Twitter (#lpfm) to promote this call-in day. To collaborate, contact Alyssa@prometheusradio.org.

2) August In-district meetings with key Senators. If you are in any of these states and you would be interested in scheduling an in-district meeting in August with that Senator's office, please contact: expandlpfm@prometheusradio.org
