Mission, Vision and Values

The Prometheus Mission: The Prometheus Radio Project builds, supports, and advocates for community radio stations which bring together and empower participatory community voices and movements for social change. To that end, we demystify technologies, the political process that governs access to our media system, and the effects of media on our lives and our communities!

Prometheus Values: Prometheus fights the domination of political and cultural life by corporations. Corporations have manipulated the political process governing media to create circumstances extremely favorable to their interests. And these giant private interests have the power to use their ownership of media to shape our society.

We work in solidarity with people all over the globe who struggle for freedom and social justice, and our role in this struggle is to help democratize the access to communications tools. We are rabidly non- hierarchical, decisively anti-authoritarian, avidly pro-feminist, staunchly anti-racist, and flamboyantly anti-homophobic. We are anti- commercial, non-partisan, irreligious, and iconoclastic- though respectful of all beliefs that don't harm others. And we are, by the way, against the destruction of the planet through war and environmental devastation.

Prometheus Vision: Progressive, social justice movements should be winning the battle for a better future. Radio belongs to all people because electromagnetism is as natural a phenomenon as sunshine and air. The goal of Prometheus Radio Project is to force a reconsideration of the spectrum policies that have reserved the overwhelming majority of the airwaves for a powerful few who take advantage of the complicated technical and political issues of spectrum management. We seek to ensure that ownership and control of media, as well as access to technology, are not barriers to social justice and equality.
